The Good

I’m once again in that predicament where there is very little to report under this section, so I’ll keep this brief!

I liked some of the first Now You See Me, right up until the final twist where I completely lost interest. I’m pretty sure no one was calling for this sequel, but alas here we are!

The best thing I can say about this is some of the effects are pretty good. The Jesse Eisenberg rain trick seen in the trailers looks pretty cool, but you see all you need to see in the trailer so not much point watching the film. Some of the camera trickery and movement is quite cool also but as the Horsemen continuously break that age old tradition of never revealing their secrets, it negates anything interesting the film is trying to do.

So…

The Bad

This film has made me angry. Everything about it annoys me! We’ll start with the absolute mess that is the plot. For a film which tries so hard to just be big dumb entertainment, it also goes out of its way to be absolutely impenetrable, nonsensical and crushingly dull. Half an hour in I lost interest in every single thing this film threw at me, and it made no attempt to lure me back in.

This film is so bad I don’t event want to waste much more of my time talking about it, as I have already wasted 2 hours and 9 minutes of my life watching this poor excuse for a film. Here’s a one sentence summary of how terrible the rest of the film is; the script is dire, the pacing is awful, the acting is atrocious, the motives are unexplained, the twists are unearned, and almost everything is unnecessary.

I absolutely loathed this film. In case that wasn’t obvious already. The biggest trick this film is able to pull off is making a 129 minute film feel like a lifetime.

The Verdict

I saw this movie so you don’t have to. Or should that be “now I’ve seen Now You See Me 2 so you don’t have to too”. Please, I urge you not to waste your time! This movie is absolute nonsense, a waste of film, and a waste of your time. Give it a miss!

Agree with everything I’ve said, or am I a totally misguided idiot who has got it all wrong? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Trivia about the first film: Emma Stone was the first choice for Isla Fisher’s character because the producers wanted to remind people of Emma teaming up with Jesse and Woody in Zombieland. She was already committed to Gangster Squad, so the producers decided that Isla would fit the bill as a famous redhead.
