Movie News Round-up (6-15th April 2016)

Is it just me or has this week been a really big week for movie news?! We’ve had new trailers, casting announcements, and lots more! This got me thinking that it would be cool to do a weekly movie news round up with my takes on the stories, so here is the very first edition for your perusal!

This is a slightly bigger bumper edition as there’s tons of important things to talk about. I’ll do my best to post weekly (Fridays), but in slower weeks I might save the stories until there are a few more to talk about. I hope you enjoy my musings; please let me know what you think in the comments below!

First look at the “Rogue One” trailer

The Story: Pretty self-explanatory really, the official teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first in a series of anthology films, dropped on the 7th April. This comes a full 8 months before the film’s release, but hey, it’s never too early to get excited about Star Wars right?

My Take: YAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSS. I mean anyone who knows me well enough knows how much I adore Star Wars, and I was excited for Rogue One, but this trailer has got me chomping at the bit for this film. Aesthetically it is absolutely perfect, and I lost my sh*t when the AT-ATs appeared. This is exactly what a trailer needs to be; showing you enough to make you excited, but not giving the game away. Let’s hope the next trailer is just as good.

Second “Suicide Squad” trailer released

The Story: With the news of post BvS re-shoots causing some people to panic about Suicide Squad, a new trailer was released on April 10th.

My Take: I love this trailer! It is sufficiently different to the last one, but maintains the same bonkers energy and wittiness that the first trailer had. I was initially concerned that they’d used all the best jokes across both of the trailers, but it’s cool, that’s why they’re doing the re-shoots right?

Ben Affleck to direct first solo Batman movie

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice

The Story: So this was hardly breaking news as it had been rumoured for weeks, but it was confirmed at CinemaCon that Ben Affleck would direct and star in the first solo Batman movie of the DCEU. (Read more here).

My Take: I really rate Affleck as a director, and I thought his version of Bruce Wayne/Batman was one of the best things about Batman vs Superman. I’m super excited to see what Affleck will do with more creative control over the character, and how this could shape the rest of the DCEU. Zack Snyder who?!

Charlize Theron cast as villain in “Fast & Furious 8”

The Story: Not many details on this one yet, but it was announced that Charlize Theron would be joining the cast of Fast & Furious 8, playing an antagonist.

My Take: Aside from literally everyone beating me to the “Fast & Furiosa” jokes, I was pretty pleased to hear about this one. Theron brings a bit of gravitas to the cast, but as details are unknown about her character, I haven’t got much more to add!

Double Kingsman news!

The Story: Big week for Kingsman news! Star Taron Egerton tweeted the new teaser poster which dropped MAJOR hints about a certain returning character. Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal also posted a picture of him and Egerton on Instagram, confirming he will be starring in the spy sequel.

My Take: My dislike for the first Kingsman is very well known so I wasn’t jumping for joy about the new poster. I loved Pascal in Game of Thrones however, so I’m looking forward to seeing the role he’ll play in The Golden Circle.

New MCU Spider-Man movie gets it’s title!

The Story: More big news fresh out of CinemaCon, Marvel unveiled the new logo and title for the upcoming Spider-Man movie, now that they have the rights to this character.

My Take: The internet was divided, but I was totally fine with this title. For a start, I’d already heard whisperings of this title last week so it wasn’t unexpected news, and also we literally only have a logo and a title! Calm down, wait for the film, and judge it when you see it! The title makes sense for me, and hints at a young, fun Spider-Man; exactly what fans have been asking for for years. I also love the Spidey font; very comic book-esque!

First look at “Doctor Strange” trailer

The Story: It feels like we’ve been seeing pictures of Benedict Cumberbatch in full costume for months, but now we finally have the trailer!

My Take: Wow does this look different, and in the best possible way! I’m not the only one who was getting flashbacks to the Nolan Batman trailers, and this first look at Doctor Strange looks eerily similar. It bodes well for the film which is released later this year, and I’m looking forward to Marvel introducing some magic into their cinematic universe!

21 Jump Street / Men in Black is officially a thing

The Story: There have been whisperings about this for a while; I’ll be honest I thought it was a joke. However today the title was announced as MiB23 – this might just be a working title or it might get a subtitle at some point, but yep this is now a thing.

My Take: There’s a reason why I thought this was a joke when I first heard about it, because the whole thing sounds totally ridiculous. The inspired end credits scene of 22 Jump Street almost entirely negated the need for any sequels even if sequels are almost inevitable these days. I can’t really comment more, it’s very early days, but I’m not feeling hopeful!

Michael Keaton in the MCU?!

The Story: He’s played Batman, he’s played Birdman, but could Michael Keaton be set to play Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming? These rumours broke late Wednesday evening (13th), so watch this space!

My Take: LORD JESUS YES. Michael Keaton has had a great run of films recently, and he would be so perfect as Vulture. Please, please, PLEASE let this happen!!

James Cameron announces “Avatar” sequels

The Story: Director James Cameron made a special announcement at CinemaCon that there would in fact be four Avatar sequels, in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023.

My Take: It was the sequel announcement literally no one was waiting for, but there we go. It is now supposedly a thing that’s happening but maybe they won’t be as terrible as the first one? (PS: they probably will be!)

That’s all for the news this week folks – hopefully there’ll be even more exciting things to report on next week. Leave your thoughts on this weeks news in the comments below!
