Here’s the full rundown of what went down at the 88th Academy Awards. I was live blogging so if you want to read in chronological order, start from the bottom and work your way up!
5:05am: Wowsers it is late, but what a great show, even spread of winners and super happy with how many Mad Max won, and that Spotlight received the recognition it deserved.
5:01am: And the Oscar goes to…Spotlight for Best Picture. YAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! Ok, so I put money on this as an outside bet so I’m now slightly richer, but seriously I am so so happy that this film won. My favourite of the Best Picture nominees and absolutely deserving of the big prize. Now what to spend my winnings on…!
4:59am: This is all I’ve got right now.
4:55am: And the Oscar goes to…Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Actor for The Revenant. He did it!!!!!! 6 nominations, and this is the first win. Leo has been practicing this speech for his entire life. What an incredible actor, and an incredible performance, thoroughly deserving…obviously!!
4:53am: Here we go, Best Actor time!
4:48am: And the Oscar goes to…Brie Larson, Best Actress for Room. This award had her name written on it from day one! What a remarkable performance from this amazing, amazing actress!
4:41am: “They do not listen to your words, they just see the colour of your skin” – a powerful quote from The Revenant quoted by Iñárritu in his speech for Best Director.
4:38am: And the Oscar goes to…Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Best Director for The Revenant. Iñárritu has done the double, and absolutely deserved it for this extraordinary film. His talent is unfathomable, and he’s a genuinely nice dude. Congratulations Alejandro!
4:36am: BaeBae Abrams walking on to the Star Wars theme gives me life.
4:31am: After the atrocity of Grimsby, I’m genuinely happy to see Ali G again; easily SBC’s best character. #StainesBias
4:28am: And the Oscar goes to…Sam Smith for Best Original Song from Spectre. If I wasn’t so tired I’d probably be angrier than I am right now. This song sucks, and Gaga should’ve won. But kudos to Sam Smith dedicating his award to the LGBT community.
4:24am: And the Oscar goes to…Ennio Morricone for Best Original Score for The Hateful Eight. As much as I would’ve liked Johann Johansson to get this for Sicario, Morricone’s score is masterful. Absolute legend and one of the greatest composers of all time.
4:16am: Chills.
4:13am: Lady Gaga now performing the Oscar nominated song from The Hunting Ground. She’s slaying it! What a voice!
4:09am: And the Oscar goes to…Son of Saul for Best Foreign Language Film. Will be sure to check some of these out, Son of Saul and Theeb have been on my list for a while!
4:06am: And the Oscar goes to…Stutterer for Best Live Action Short Film. Again I haven’t seen these ones, but congratulations to the winners!
4:05am: “He was the zebra in Madagascar!”
4:02am: We’re at the 4am mark and I’m feeling pretty sleepy! I’m on to my 2nd hot cross bun of the evening. It’s a wild one.
3:57am: So many greats lost last year; respect.
3:48am: #LouisCKorRiot
3:46am: Ok I don’t know what kind of joke Chris Rock was trying to make then, but it fell REALLY FLAT.
3:43am: And the Oscar goes to…Amy for Best Documentary Film. The only one I had seen on this list, but what a wonderful film this was; made me cry so much!
3:40am: And the Oscar goes to…A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness for Best Documentary Short Film. I hadn’t seen any of these (for shame!), but a great speech from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
3:32am: And the Oscar goes to…Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) for Best Supporting Actor. The best thing about this movie, but undoubtedly the safest pick. This category was wide open and hugely competitive though, literally could’ve gone to any one of those nominated and I would’ve said they deserved it.
3:30am: Come at me bro.
3:29am: Such a good film!
3:23am: Kate Winslet you rock those glasses girrrrl.
3:18am: The Weeknd performing “Earned It” from 50 Shades of Grey. Genuinely the only good thing about that film.
3:12am: And the Oscar goes to…Inside Out for Best Animated Feature. I mean was it going to be anything else really?! Super happy with this pick, this is one of the greatest animated films ever made, and thoroughly deserves this award. It should’ve been nominated for Best Picture, but it’s ok, this makes up for it.
3:12am: Serious question.
3:09am: And the Oscar goes to…Bear Story for Best Animated Short. I confess I had only seen Sanjay’s Super Team in this category, but Bear Story looks adorable, I’ll be sure to check it out!
3:04am: Jacob Tremblay is me.
3:01am: I am not ok.
2:57am: And the Oscar goes to…Ex Machina for Best Visual Effects. Wow now that’s an unexpected pick, but super happy to see Ex Machina win something! I had this as a lock in for Star Wars, but I am really happy with this result!
2:55am: Crushed it.
2:53am: And the Oscar goes to…Mad Max: Fury Road for Sound Mixing. Eesh I mean can I just assume Mad Max will win everything now including the things it isn’t nominated in and go to bed now?! Just kidding, I’m having a good time!
2:50am: And the Oscar goes to…Mad Max: Fury Road for Sound Editing. This film is KILLING IT in the technical categories right now.
2:49am: Inner nerd is the happiest person ever right now.
2:41am: And the Oscar goes to…Margaret Sixel (Mad Max: Fury Road) for Film Editing. The editing in this film is absolutely sublime. Every time I think about it, I want to watch this film. Simply magnificent.
2:38am: And the Oscar goes to…Emmanuel Lubezki (The Revenant) for Best Cinematography. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ROGER DEAKINS!!! Forget Leo, why has Roger Deakins never won an Oscar?!
2:36am:
2:35am: I didn’t plan my snacks well enough, all I have is hot cross buns and gluten-free banana loaf…D’OH.
2:28am: And the Oscar goes to…Mad Max: Fury Road for Make-up and Hairstyling. Wow, three in a row for Mad Max: Fury Road! I’ve been able to copy and paste most of my last few updates…!
2:25am: And the Oscar goes to…Mad Max: Fury Road for Production Design. 100% the right pick here; the world-building in this is absolutely remarkable. What a wonderfully bleak and beautiful world they are able to create.
2:23am: And repeat every time Mad Max wins anything…
2:22am: And the Oscar goes to…Mad Max: Fury Road for Best Costume Design! Digging the jacket Jenny Beavan, you can rock that “bag lady” look all day long. “What a lovely day”!
2:13am: And the Oscar goes to…Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl. Damn, I knew I should’ve put money on this, I’ve been dead on with my picks so far. Couple of points about this one, Vikander should have been in the Lead Actress category for this role, and should have received a supporting nomination for Ex Machina. Competitive category this year that could’ve been anyone’s to take home.
2:09am: Real talk.
2:06am: This is one of my least favourite Bond themes (Sam Smith “The Writing’s on the Wall”). I guess Bond themes get nominated for an Oscar by default these days?
2:03am: Ok controversially I think maybe Chris Rock should have just got the diversity stuff out his system in the opening monologue…that last bit fell a bit flat :S
2:00am: Nothing bad has ever come of drinking coffee at this time right?
1:53am: And the Oscar goes to…The Big Short for Best Adapted Screenplay! Not surprised about this one, and that makes me 2/2 on picks so far.
1:48am: And the Oscar goes to… Spotlight for Best Original Screenplay. Thoroughly deserved, wonderful movie!
1:45am: Serious point, The Academy needs to look at itself and the way it works in terms of diversity of nominations, but the film industry as a whole needs to recognise diversity.
1:42am: Chris Rock is killing it with the opening monologue! Making some great points, but very tongue in cheek, just how it should be.
1:34am: ZING we have 2 #OscarsSoWhite jokes already!
1:32am: Morning everyone! Or should that be evening? Anyway, YAY OSCARS TIME!! I’m feeling pumped. Currently in the opening montage and what a great year 2015 was for movies.
