Top 10 Disney Songs

This list has been a long time coming, but with The Jungle Book currently in cinemas, I was reminded about how much I loved the music from the original 1968 movie, and that got me thinking about my favourite Disney songs.

It’s taken a good week of ordering and re-ordering this list, but it’s finally ready…until I change my mind again! Check out my Top 10 Disney Songs, and let me know your favourites in the comments below.

10. “Under the Sea” – The Little Mermaid

This song never fails to make me smile; instantly recognisable and catchy! It had a bit of a tussle with “Part of your World” also from The Little Mermaid, for the number 10 spot on this list, but won out because of it’s catchiness.

9. “Colours of the Wind” – Pocahontas

Has everything a great Disney song needs; anthemic chorus and beautiful lyrics. The visuals that go along with it are absolutely gorgeous as well. The music in Pocahontas is pretty underrated in my opinion; “Just Around the River Bend” and “Savages” are also excellent. Just not quite Top 10 worthy!

8. “Prince Ali” – Aladdin

Where most people would pick “A Whole New World” as their favourite song from Aladdin, for me “Prince Ali” wins every time. If I start singing it in the morning it will almost certainly still be stuck in my head by the time I go to bed. It’s ridiculously catchy, and the late great Robin William’s different vocal characterisations are hilarious.

7. “Reflection” – Mulan

Come on, who hasn’t sung this to themselves in the mirror at some point? Just me? Okay then! I prefer the original soundtrack version, but Christina Aguilera’s version is great as well. Easily up there with the best of Disney’s power ballads.

6. “Be Our Guest” – Beauty and the Beast

Be_Our_Guest

It’s difficult to pick a favourite song from Beauty and the Beast, but I absolutely adore the animated sequence that accompanies this song; it’s a visual treat for the eyes! Once again, ridiculously catchy, and one I frequently find myself singing!

5. “Let it Go” – Frozen

Everyone who knows me well enough knows how much I love Frozen, so there had to be a song from that on this list. Whilst it might have been ruined for many parents who have endured their children listening to it on repeat, “Let it Go” is an instant classic and already up there with some of the best Disney songs. Empowering and magical, this song just had to be on the list!

4. “Hakuna Matata” – The Lion King

I firmly believe there is no way you couldn’t feel happy after listening to this song! It’s wonderfully upbeat message about “no worries”, it’s catchy tune, and comedy, make it one of the very best, and I’m sure it would appear on a lot of people’s top 10 lists.

3. “I Wanna Be Like You” – The Jungle Book

Could’ve easily been “The Bare Necessities” in this spot as well, but this wonderfully jazzy number from The Jungle Book had to make the prestigious top 3! It’s a real toe-tapper and a highlight of the original animated movie. I didn’t care too much for the Christopher Walken version in the new Jon Favreau movie, but if anything it reminded me just how much I loved the original, which is never a bad thing!

2. “Circle of Life” – The Lion King

From the iconic opening sunset, to the goosebump-inducing finale with Simba being held aloft over the savanna, I love everything about this song. Easily one of the best animated sequences of all time, this is a triumphant, majestic, fists in the air moment, that really sets the tone for the rest of this epic film. As a complete package, The Lion King easily has the best music out of all the Disney films in my opinion. It is also the soundtrack to my childhood as we had the soundtrack cassette tape (ask your parents!) in the car on repeat!

1. “Make a Man out of You” – Mulan

I'll_Make_a_Man_Out_of_You

I wrestled with this number 1 spot for a really long time, but repeated listens of this song easily cemented it as my favourite. If I need an instant pick me up, this song does the trick. If I need to feel pumped up, this is the first song I go to. If I just want to listen to a great song, with amazing lyrics, heart and meaning, then this is the song I listen to. It has everything and so much more, “with all the strength of a raging fire”!

You can listen to my Top 10 on this Spotify playlist…enjoy!

  1. It’s a OK list ‘man out of you’ definitely deserves the no.1 spot but real shame you left out the theme song to beauty and the beast which is classic and was in my top ten favourite songs if you listen to the official release by Celine Dion & Peobo Bryson who unquestionably has the best male voice of all time.

Also ‘Gaston’ the song definitely deserves to be on that list as it was brilliantly written.

Finally if you’re going to have an Alladin song then surely, SURELY ‘A whole new world’, again sung by Peobo.

As an afterthought how about ‘Somewhere out there’ from ‘An American Tail’? That sing can still bring a tear to my eye and sung by the other best male vocalist and my personal favourite – James Ingram.

Good list though, am singing them all in my head 🙂
